생전의 자토는 매우 침착하며 사려 깊은 인물이었다. 그러나 황천 세계에서 인간이 맛볼 수 있는 대부분의 경험을 무한히 체험하게 된 자토는 소생 후, 어떤 것에도 감동을 느끼지 않는 성격이 되어버렸다. 그 때문에 자신을 포함한 모든 사건에 가치를 느끼지 못한다. 좋고 나쁨도 없고, 기쁨도 분노도, 살아 있는 의의마저 느껴지지 않는다. 단, 유일하게 밀리아에게만은 감정이라 부를 수 있는 미약한 충동을 느끼고 있다.
【배경】
어새신 조직의 말단이었던 자토는 종전관리국으로부터 금주를 제공받고, 자신의 시력을 대가로 금주 제5법 「식정영진」을 사용. 그림자를 자유롭게 조종하는 능력을 익혀 단숨에 수령의 지위까지 올라간다.
그 후, 조직의 인원을 다수 투입하는 대규모적인 계획을 실행에 옮기지만, 중요한 역할을 담당했던 밀리아 레이지의 배신에 의해 계획은 실패. 조직 역시 괴멸적인 타격을 입고 자신도 경찰기구에 체포되고 만다. 유일하게 신뢰하며 마음을 허락했던 밀리아와의 예고 없는 이별은 지금까지 키웠던 애정을 비굴한 형태로 일그러뜨렸고, 자토는 결계 감옥 안에서 그녀에 대한 보복만을 생각하게 되었다.
그러던 중, 범죄자도 출장이 가능한 「제2차 성기사단 선발 무도대회」의 개최에 대해 알게 되어, 대회 참가를 결의. 밀리아에 대한 복수를 개시했다.
그러나 금주의 대가는 컸다. 그의 몸과 마음은 차츰 쇠약해져, 결국 그림자(에디)에게 육체를 빼앗기고 만다.
그 후 자토의 육체는 에디가 차지하지만, 짧은 시간에 지나지 않았다. 육체의 부패를 막지 못하고 최후의 순간을 맞게 된 것이다. 에디는 새로운 숙주를 찾지 못하고 사망했다.
그 후 원로원의 손에 의해 소생되어 부활을 이루었지만, 황천을 경험했기 때문인지 사물에 대한 관심이 희박해지고 말았다. 밀리아에 관한 것 이외에는….
밀리아와 재회해 자신의 마음을 확인한 자토는 그녀를 지키기 위해 싸울 것을 결의하고 선언했다.

Soon after becoming the leader of the Guild, he participated in a high-risk mission that was thrown into lethal disarray by Millia Rage's betrayal. The Guild suffered a great many losses, including the capture of Zato himself by the authorities. The affection he had felt for Millia turned to hate, and from his prison cell he plotted revenge.
Not long after his incarceration began, Zato learned that criminals would be allowed to participate in the Second Sacred Order of Holy Knights tournament, and decided this was his chance to begin his revenge against Millia. The cost of his curse was proving higher than he'd anticipated, however, and before long, his physical body could no longer maintain its form, and Eddie took control of it.
Eddie's period of ascendancy did not last long, as Zato's body deteriorated faster than Eddie had expected, and he was unable to keep it alive. When Zato died, Eddie soon followed.
The moment Zato awoke he knew he had been resurrected-he recognized the sensation of being alive. Now, however, he saw both himself and the world from a much broader perspective. Though his memories remained intact, nothing could elicit excitement or interest in him. The Conclave had imprisoned him after his resurrection, but he made no attempts to escape the world of darkness they had trapped him in. Only one thought aroused any emotion in him: That of Millia, the person who had once betrayed him.
But why, he wondered. No matter how much he thought on it, an answer was not forthcoming. Therefore Zato decided that he would leave his prison, track down Millia, and learn the truth for himself.

Soon after becoming the Guild leader, he launched a large-scale mission that deployed many of the Guild's personnel, ultimately failing due to Millia Rage's betrayal, who held a crucial role in the mission. The Guild suffered a great many losses, including the capture of Zato himself by the authorities. The affection he had for Millia turned to hate, and the thought of revenge engulfed his mind during his time in the dimension prison.
Not long after his incarceration, he learned of the Second Holy Order Selection Tournament, which allows the participation of criminals. Believing that this was his chance to exact revenge against Millia, he participated in the tournament.
However, his mind and body were weakened gradually due to the price of his curse, and his body was eventually taken over by the shadow (Eddie).
Eddie's ascendancy did not last long as Zato's body continued to deteriorate. As the body withered and came to an end, Eddie died along with it before he could find a new host.
Eventually, Zato was resurrected at the hands of the Conclave. However, perhaps due to his time in the Underworld, he became indifferent towards all matters—save for one exception, Millia.
After reuniting with Millia and reaffirming his feelings towards her, he swears to protect her at all costs.
He is currently a member of the reconstituted Post-War Administration Bureau, where he works together with Millia to support Illyria from the shadows.

Er behauptet, die Welt sei ein langweiliger Ort, doch selbst das ist eine Aussage, die mehr seiner stoischen Analyse als eines tatsächlichen Gefühls entspringt.
In dieser Langeweile gibt es nur eine Ausnahme: Millia. Nur in ihrer Nähe empfindet Zato etwas, das man Gefühle nennen könnte.
[Kurzdarstellung]
Zato ist der ehemalige Anführer der Assassinengilde und kann seinen eigenen Schatten manipulieren. Einst stand er ganz unten in der Hierarchie der Gilde, doch nachdem er sein Augenlicht gegen den durch das Nachkriegsverwaltungsbüro bereitgestellten Fluch eingetauscht hatte, Schatten zu kontrollieren, stieg er schnell auf.
Kurz nachdem er Anführer der Gilde geworden war, nahm er an einer großangelegten Mission teil, in der viele Angehörige der Gilde eingesetzt waren. Die Mission scheiterte letzten Endes am Verrat von Millia Rage, die eine wichtige Rolle in der Mission spielte. Die Gilde erlitt zahlreiche Verluste, einschließlich der Inhaftierung von Zato durch die Behörden. Die Zuneigung, die er für Millia empfunden hatte, wandelte sich in Hass. Während seiner Zeit im Dimensionsgefängnis nahm der Gedanke an Rache Zatos Geist ein.

Cuando estaba vivo, Zato era conocido por su temperamento tranquilo y por tener en cuenta cada aspecto de un problema.
Sin embargo, eso cambió cuando murió. En el Inframundo fue sometido repetidamente a todo el amplio abanico de experiencias que un humano puede sentir y eso ya había acabado con toda su capacidad de reacción emocional cuando resucitó. En consecuencia, no ve valor en nada, ni siquiera en sí mismo. Lo bueno y lo malo, la alegría y la ira: son solo palabras para él. Afirma que el mundo es un lugar aburrido, pero incluso esa es una afirmación que nace más de la costumbre que del sentimiento real.
No obstante, hay una excepción a su hastío: Millia. Solo cerca de ella Zato puede sentir algo parecido a lo que alguien podría llamar emoción.

Zato es el antiguo jefe del Gremio de Asesinos y tiene la habilidad de manipular mágicamente su propia sombra. Estuvo en la parte más baja de la jerarquía del Gremio, pero después de intercambiar su capacidad de ver por el poder de controlar las sombras que le proporcionó la Oficina de Administración de la Posguerra, ascendió rápidamente en el escalafón.
Poco después de convertirse en el líder del Gremio, participó en una misión a gran escala que requería a la mayor parte de su personal, aunque al final fracasó debido a la traición de Millia Rage, que tenía un papel crucial en la misión. El Gremio sufrió muchas pérdidas, incluyendo la captura del propio Zato por las autoridades. El afecto que sentía por Millia se convirtió en odio y planeó su venganza desde la prisión dimensional.
Poco después de empezar su condena, Zato se enteró de que a los criminales se les permitiría participar en el Torneo de Selección de la Segunda Orden Sagrada de los Santos Caballeros y decidió que era la oportunidad para vengarse de Millia.
Sin embargo, su mente y su cuerpo se fueron debilitando poco a poco debido al precio de su maldición y, en poco tiempo, la sombra (Eddie) acabó apoderándose de su cuerpo.
El ascenso de Eddie no duró mucho, ya que el cuerpo de Zato siguió deteriorándose. Cuando el cuerpo se marchitó y llegó a su fin, Eddie murió junto con él antes de que pudiera encontrar un nuevo huésped.
Más tarde, el Cónclave resucitó a Zato. Sin embargo, tal vez debido a su estancia en el Inframundo, se volvió indiferente hacia todo, salvo una excepción, Millia.
Tras reunirse con Millia y reafirmar sus sentimientos hacia ella, juró protegerla a toda costa.
Actualmente es miembro de la reconstituida Oficina de Administración de la Posguerra, donde trabaja junto a Millia para apoyar a Iliria desde la sombra.

Quand il était encore vivant, Zato était connu pour son tempérament calme. C'était quelqu'un de réfléchi qui analysait soigneusement chaque aspect d'un problème.
Hélas, cette attitude disparaît à sa mort. Le temps qu'il passe dans l'au-delà lui fait connaître tout le spectre des expériences humaines, ce qui semble avoir détruit en lui toute capacité à ressentir des émotions. C'est pourquoi plus rien n'a de valeur à ses yeux, pas même sa propre vie. Le bien, le mal, la joie ou la colère ne sont plus que des mots pour lui. Il prétend que le monde l'ennuie, mais même cette déclaration tient plus de l'habitude que d'un véritable ressenti.
La seule exception à cette langueur est Millia. Quand il est avec elle, Zato peut enfin éprouver ce qu'on pourrait appeler une émotion.
[Histoire]
Zato est l'ancien chef de la Guilde des assassins. Il part du rang le plus bas dans la hiérarchie de l'organisation, mais grimpe rapidement les échelons après avoir échangé sa vue contre son pouvoir des ombres, que lui accorde le Bureau administratif de l'après-guerre.
Peu après être devenu le chef de la Guilde, il participe à une mission de grande ampleur. Celle-ci se termine mal à cause de la trahison de Millia, qui jouait un rôle crucial. La Guilde subit de nombreuses pertes ; Zato est même emprisonné par les autorités. L'affection qu'il avait pour la jeune femme se change en haine tandis qu'il devient obnubilé par sa vengeance depuis sa cellule dimensionnelle.
Quelque temps après son incarcération, Zato apprend que les criminels seront autorisés à participer au tournoi de sélection du deuxième Ordre sacré et décide que c'est là l'occasion idéale de se venger.
Cependant, le prix de sa malédiction s'avère plus élevé que prévu, affaiblissant son corps et son esprit. Bientôt, Eddie en prend le contrôle.
Il ne reste pas longtemps au pouvoir, car le corps de Zato continue à se détériorer, au point qu'il lui est impossible de le maintenir en vie. Eddie n'a pas le temps de trouver un nouvel hôte et suit Zato dans la mort.
Zato est par la suite ressuscité par le Conclave, mais rien ne semble plus l'intéresser, peut-être à cause du temps passé dans l'au-delà. Seule une pensée parvient à éveiller une émotion en lui : Millia.
Une fois Zato et Millia réunis, il réaffirme ses sentiments envers elle et jure de la protéger quoi qu'il arrive.
Il est actuellement membre du nouveau Bureau administratif de l'après-guerre, où il travaille sous la supervision de Millia afin d'aider secrètement le gouvernement illyrien.

Da vivo, Zato era noto per la sua compostezza e per tenere in grande considerazione ogni aspetto di un problema.
Tutto questo cambiò dopo la sua morte. Zato fu sottoposto all'intera estensione dell'esperienza umana nell'aldilà e ciò bruciò completamente la sua capacità di reazione emotiva al ritorno in vita. Di conseguenza non vede valore in nulla, nemmeno in se stesso. Bene e male, gioia e rabbia... per lui sono solo parole. Sostiene che il mondo sia noioso, ma anche questa affermazione nasce più dall'abitudine che da sentimenti reali.
C'è un'eccezione a questo nichilismo: Millia. Quando è con lei, Zato riesce a provare qualcosa di simile a ciò che potremmo chiamare emozione.

Zato era il leader della Gilda degli Assassini e possiede la capacità di manipolare magicamente la propria ombra. Inizialmente era l'ultimo nella gerarchia della Gilda, ma dopo aver barattato la vista per il potere di controllare le ombre, offerto dall'Ufficio Amministrativo Postbellico, scalò rapidamente i ranghi.
Poco dopo essere diventato leader della Gilda, partecipò a una missione su larga scala, con lo spiegamento di gran parte del personale della Gilda, che si concluse con la sconfitta causata dal tradimento di Millia Rage, il cui ruolo nella missione era cruciale. La Gilda subì numerose perdite e Zato fu catturato dalle autorità. L'affetto che Zato provava per Millia si trasformò in odio e il desiderio di vendetta gli annebbiò la mente mentre durante l'intero periodo di prigionia.
Non molto tempo dopo l'inizio della detenzione, Zato scoprì che anche ai criminali era concesso partecipare al torneo per i Cavalieri del Secondo Ordine Sacro. Ritenendo questa l'occasione giusta per dare inizio alla vendetta contro Millia, decise di partecipare.
Tuttavia, il prezzo da pagare per la sua maledizione cominciò a rivelarsi e in breve tempo il suo corpo e la sua mente si indebolirono gradualmente, permettendo alla sua ombra (Eddie) di prenderne il controllo.
Il controllo esercitato da Eddie non durò a lungo, poichè il corpo di Zato continuava a deteriorarsi; quando Zato morì, anche Eddie subì la stessa sorte, in quanto non poté trovare un nuovo ospite.
Dopo che Zato fu riportato in vita per dal Conclave, forse per la sua permanenza nell'aldilà, era indifferente a tutto. Solo un pensiero accendeva ancora in lui delle emozioni: quello di Millia.
Dopo essersi riunito a Millia e aver riaffermato i propri sentimenti nei suoi confronti, giurò di proteggerla ad ogni costo.
Attualmente è un membro del rinato Ufficio Amministrativo Postbellico, dove lavora al fianco di Millia per sostenere Illyria dall'ombra.

Em vida, Zato era conhecido por sua atitude tranquila e por analisar minuciosamente todos os aspectos de um problema.
Contudo, isso mudou quando ele morreu. No submundo, foi cobaia de todos os tipos de experimentos humanos por incontáveis vezes, fazendo com que perdesse toda a sua capacidade emocional quando ressuscitado. Por isso, ele não vê valor em nada, nem mesmo em si mesmo. O bem e o mal, a alegria e a raiva, não passam de palavras vazias para ele. Zato-1 afirma que o mundo é um lugar monótono, mas até isso é resultado de sua análise racional, e não de seus sentimentos.
Porém, há uma exceção à sua indiferença: Millia. Somente perto dela é que ele consegue sentir algo que se possa ser chamado de emoção.
[História]
Zato é o antigo líder da Guilda dos Assassinos e pode controlar sua própria sombra. Já esteve na patente mais baixa da hierarquia da Guilda, mas ascendeu rapidamente após trocar sua visão pela maldição de controlar sombras concedida pelo Departamento Administrativo Pós-guerra.
Logo após se tornar o líder da Guilda, Zato-1 organizou uma missão de grande escala que mobilizou muitos dos membros da Guilda, mas que acabou falhando devido à traição de Millia Rage, que tinha uma função crucial para o plano. A Guilda sofreu muitas perdas, incluindo a captura de Zato pelas autoridades. O afeto que sentia por Millia se transformou em ódio, e a ideia de vingança era só o que ele pensava enquanto estava na prisão dimensional.
Pouco depois de ser preso, ficou sabendo que criminosos podiam participar do Torneio de Seleção da Segunda Ordem Sagrada. Convencido de que essa era sua chance de se vingar de Millia, ele se inscreveu no torneio.
Porém, sua mente e corpo foram se desgastando aos poucos devido ao preço de sua maldição, até que seu corpo foi finalmente dominado pela sombra (Eddie).
A ascensão de Eddie foi curta, pois Zato continuou a se deteriorar. Quando o corpo murchou e chegou ao fim, Eddie pereceu junto a ele antes de conseguir encontrar um novo hospedeiro.
Posteriormente, Zato foi trazido de volta à vida pelo Conclave. No entanto, possivelmente por conta do tempo que passou no Submundo, ele ficou indiferente a tudo, com uma única exceção: Millia.
Após se reunir com Millia e reafirmar seus sentimentos por ela, ele jurou protegê-la a todo custo.
Atualmente, ele é membro do reconstituído Departamento Administrativo Pós-guerra, onde trabalha junto a Millia para apoiar Illyria das sombras.
