Isene is a minor location in the Guilty Gear series. A small, remote island, it is the main setting of Guilty Gear Judgment's Story Mode.[note 1]

Design

Isene is a small, remote island in the southern seas with large expanses of mountainous terrain. It is an isolated place, populated by fewer than a thousand people.[1] The island is home to many ancient ruins, including a massive still-standing tower that sits near a gate to the other world.[4] Though Isene was once a vibrant country,[5] Raymond's experiments have decimated the island and left few survivors.

Four distinct areas of Isene are visited during Judgment:

  • Liberia: a rural village filled with quaint homes and signs of recent human activity, now destroyed and overrun with monsters.
  • Ashnay: An overgrown swamplike region, featuring a river and a number of ancient ruins.
  • Ksanaka: An underground area within the ruins, converted by Raymond into a laboratory for his experiments.
  • Tower of Wind: A large ruin built at the site of a gate to the other world.

Story

Raymond, a scientist shunned by the larger scientific community for his immoral experiments, becomes aware of Isene while researching methods to become a god. Thanks to its remote location, limited population, and proximity to the other world, it is an ideal location for him to execute his plan to achieve godhood, to the point where Raymond comes to believe that the island was made for him and its residents will recognize his divinity and welcome his experimentation.[4]

After making his way to the island, Raymond sets up an underground laboratory hidden deep within the island's ruins and begins his research.[4] He performs experiments on both the island's residents and monsters from the other world who he retrieved using the gate atop the Tower of Wind; these experiments include both fusing monsters together[6] and fusing the residents of the island with monsters, the latter process creating Noel.[7]

Isene's geographical isolation allows Raymond to kidnap and experiment on many of the island's population before any news of the disappearances travels beyond the country's borders.[1] However, some few residents are able to escape and rumors of terrible events happening at Isene eventually reach the ears of the outside world.[8] This news spurs the International Police Force and the nation of Zepp to both mount independent investigations of the disappearances,[9][10] and inspires the playable characters of Judgment to each travel to the island for their own reasons.

Notes

  1. The English-language game manual for Guilty Gear Judgment contradicts this, calling Judgment's setting Villtania, a small kingdom in Eastern Europe.[2] However, Judgment's in-game text uses exclusively Isene and makes no mention of Villtania or Europe,[1] in-game art depicts the area as an island, and official Japanese promotional materials call the setting an island.[3]
