There have been five large-scale extinction events since the apperance[note 1] of multicellular organisms.
Life first appeared on Earth four billion years ago. Creatures evolved from unicellular organisms to multicellular, then into animals with complex structures. Those species that adapted to their environment prospered.
Big Five refers to the five mass extinctions experienced by creatures on Earth over the course of history, during the Ordovician, Devonian, Permian, Triassic, and Cretaceous Periods.
