There were five mass extinctions during the Phanerozoic Eon. The end of the Cretaceous Period was the fifth such event. This is the most famous mass extinction, occuring about 65.5 million years ago, and causing the dinosaurs to go extinct. Pterosaurs, plesiosaurs, mosasaurs, and ammonites went completely extinct, and it's believed that 70% of all species on Earth, including dinosaurs, died off.
