There were five confirmed mass extinctions worthy of note during the Phanerozoic Eon. The end of the Ordovician Period was the first such time. This occurred roughly 440 million years ago. The majority of trilobites, brachiopods, echinoderms, corals, graptolites, conodonts, etc. flourishing at the time went extinct. This extinction event killed off about 85% of all creatures on Earth.
