Magehound
There are 682 known dog—or Canis lupus familiaris—breeds, and in Illyria alone, there are over 31 million dogs. We could create a magehound exactly like this one. It is, in other words, replaceable.
― Bedman to Ramlethal[src]
Magehounds are a species of artificially-created magical constructs with the appearance and behavior of dogs. Ramlethal Valentine has owned two across the Guilty Gear series, the first given to her by Sin Kiske and the second given to her by Bedman after the first's death at his hands.
Design
Magehounds look exactly like real dogs.[1]
Both known magehounds take the form of small, yellow-furred dogs resembling golden retrievers, with blue[2] or dark brown[3] eyes, a black nose, and a collar with a green, glowing, gear-shaped pendant that appears on them from the moment of their creation; however, whether this is the only appearance a magehound may have is unknown.
Story
Guilty Gear Xrd
On October 29th, 2187, Sin Kiske visits the captured Ramlethal Valentine and gifts her a magehound. With Sin's encouragement, she reluctantly tries to pet it, only for the dog to immediately bite her hand.[4] Despite her initial disinterest in the dog, Ramlethal continues to keep it with her while in Illyria's custody.[5]
On the night of November 1st, 2187, Bedman infiltrates the Royal Fleet One on Ariels' orders and visits Ramlethal within her dreams. Believing her to be nothing more than an emotionless construct, he informs her that she's failed in her duties and he is here to destroy her. Upon hearing that her destruction is her mother's will, Ramlethal agrees to let Bedman kill her, but requests that she be allowed to take her dog with her.[6] Seeing her sadness at the thought of being separated from her dog, Bedman realizes she's more than an unfeeling weapon.
Due to his love for his own little sister, Bedman is unable to kill young girls; instead, he decides to help Ramlethal realize her emotions. He draws Ramlethal as well as the recently-arrived Sin into a joint dream and kills Ramlethal's magehound in front of them both. Sin attempts to attack Bedman, but Ramlethal defends him, telling Sin that the magehound's death was her request and that Bedman will soon kill her as well.
Bedman apologizes to the two for the dog's death and creates a new magehound for Ramlethal, telling her that, just like her, the dog is replaceable.[6] Ramlethal leans in to pet the new magehound, but is shocked when it doesn't bite her the way her previous dog once had. Finally awakening to her own emotions, Ramlethal begins to weep as she realizes that, despite being a "replaceable" artificial construct, her now-dead magehound was a unique being and that she therefore is unique as well.
Despite her grief at the loss of her first dog, Ramlethal takes in and cares for the second, growing close to it as well.[7]
Guilty Gear -Strive-
Ramlethal continues to care for the second magehound.[8]
Traits
Magehounds are artificially-created magical pets invented to be the perfect companion.[1] They do not need to eat and do not produce waste, but otherwise behave exactly like real dogs,[1] and their personalities develop differently depending on how they are raised.[4]
Despite being magical constructs, they are unique from the moment of their creation, and even two identical magehounds will be recognizably different in terms of personality.[6]
Magehounds can be created out of thin air by those with sufficient magical ability.[4]
Trivia
- According to Sin, Ramlethal's magehounds are male.[4]
