The Maiden of the Grove (known as "Kokage no Kimi" or "Lady of the Bower") in Japanese, is Ky Kiske's lover and Sin's mother in Guilty Gear 2: Overture. She is Valentine's primary target in her Gear cell harvest. Ky manages to save her from disappearance by sacrificing his Thunderseal to freeze time around her, but since he was desperate, he didn't know exactly what he did and could not release her. It is revealed in the course of the storyline that she is a powerful Gear who was reportedly killed a few years ago, as well as being a reproduction of Justice. Concept art for Guilty Gear Vastedge XT confirms she is indeed Dizzy.
Storyline
Guilty Gear Overture
In the story, Dr. Paradigm decided to kill her to stop Valentine's plan. However, Ky Kiske stopped him, and revealed that the Maiden is not a Gear detained in Illyria but, actually, a woman he loves. Ky also admitted that Sin is their child, to add to the shock of Dr. Paradigm and Izuna. After Ky helped Dr. Paradigm free his Gear comrades from Valentine's control, Dr. Paradigm realized that the king is a good person, and at the end decided to stay in Illyria to help unfreeze the Maiden.
In the scenes of Overture, she appears suspended inside a crystal-like object with her wings outstreched. Her artwork showed more details that include a disappearing tail and a hairstyle with ribbons that tie her hair up. Official materials set her age to 8 years old and describe her as being kind and knowledgeable. It is also stated that she and Ky are not officially or publicly married, and her existence is only known to a small group of knights.
Trivia
- Initially, there were two candidates for the Maiden of the Grove's identity: Solaria and Dizzy. The latter proved to be the one who is overwhelmingly similar to the descriptions of Ky's lover, and the translation, "Maiden of the Grove" cannot refer to anyone else other than Dizzy as her stage is set in the Grove.
- Referring to the Maiden of the Grove as Ky's "wife" is both correct and incorrect. It is correct in a sense that Ky calls her "wife" out of respect, but incorrect because they are not technically married.
- According to Dr. Paradigm, the Maiden of the Grove's power is equal or even greater than Justice's.
- In the same scene, she is called "backup" in the Japanese script, but "reproduction" in the English script. This difference makes her exact origins more mysterious and questions what kind of offspring of Justice the Maiden is.
