Guilty Gear Judgment
Guilty Gear Judgment is a side-scrolling, beat em' up spin-off of the Guilty Gear series, exclusive to the PlayStation Portable, being overall the fifteenth installment.
The game is part of a bundle (two games on one disc): In the Japanese version, the other game is Guilty Gear XX Slash, while the American and European versions have Guilty Gear XX ♯Reload instead.
Gameplay
The gameplay in Judgment is similar to the GG Boost Mode found in Guilty Gear Isuka. Instead of one-on-one 2D fighting, Judgment is a side scrolling beat em' up game. Core gameplay consists of defeating large amounts of enemies and bosses across nineteen levels, while completing each character's story, which are presented in short conversations between chapters.
Instead of the series' essential Punch, Kick, Slash and Heavy Slash buttons, there are Light, Medium, Heavy Attack and Jump buttons, respectively. There is also a Back Attack and a Psych Burst Recovery that covers a large range and recovers health if enemies are hit. The Tension Gauge is again used for Overdrive attacks, while the Burst Gauge, when filled, allows unlimited Overdrive attacks until it depletes, or the use of the aforementioned Psych Burst attack. Enemies drop items, which have various benefits including health or tension boosts, extra lives or points. Move lists are slimmed-down and re-adjusted in order to coincide with the new beat em' up gameplay.
The game presents three modes, besides Options Mode. In Story Mode, the player assumes the role of a character who encounters others at intervals during the game, and unlocks those they encounter. The game's ending character specific, but is usually shared with another related character. The boss is available after collecting the J, U, D, G, M, E, N, T letters on Stage 6-1. Besides this, the game also features a co-op 2P Player Mode, and a Survival Mode, where the player has to survive increasingly more difficult areas until they are defeated.
Summary
The player character is drawn to the small island nation of Isene[note 1] after hearing news that its residents have begun to disappear at an alarming rate.[2] Upon traveling to the island's once-vibrant town of Liberia, they find it destroyed and overrun by monsters.[5] The player character travels deeper into the island to uncover the mystery behind the civilians' disappearances and the sudden monster attacks while interacting with their respective rival or related characters along the way.
Through exploring a recently abandoned laboratory, the player character discovers that the disappearances are the work of the disgraced scientist Raymond, who has been kidnapping the island's residents and transforming them into monsters as part of his experiments into attaining godhood.[6] The player character attempts to confront him within the other world he has fled to; however, Raymond is devoured by Inus, the other world's king, before the player character can apprehend him, and the player character must defeat Inus instead.[7]
With Inus defeated, Raymond reveals to the player character that he'd planned the preceding events and absorbs the dying Inus's powers from inside the beast in order to transform into a godlike entity called Judgment.[7] He takes up residence within a castle deep within the other world, intending to become ruler of it and the human world alike, but the player character tracks him down to his throne room and defeats him once more.[8] As Inus was already dead when his powers were absorbed by Raymond, the resulting fusion is unstable, and the defeated Judgment becomes unable to maintain his form;[9] he's consumed by the might of his own power, destroying the surrounding area and allowing the player character to return to the human world once more.[10]

Notes
- ↑ The English-language game manual for Guilty Gear Judgment contradicts this, calling Judgment's setting Villtania, a small kingdom in Eastern Europe.[1] However, Judgment's in-game text uses exclusively Isene and makes no mention of Villtania or Europe,[2] in-game art depicts the area as an island,[3] and official Japanese promotional materials call the setting an island.[4]
