Testament
I've been very lucky to meet people who've accepted me. I, too, used to carry myself like some sort of demon. Even though I was surrounded by accepting people.
― Testament to Nagoriyuki[src]
Testament is a former antagonist and recurring character in the Guilty Gear series. A semi-independent humanoid-type Gear that once was under Justice's control during the Crusades, Testament is the adopted child of Kliff Undersn. Proficient in various kinds of magic and wielding a scythe formed from their own blood, Testament fights alongside their beloved familiars; most notably EXE Beast and the Succubi they’ve formed a contract[16][17] with.
Design
Testament has a pale complexion, red eyes, and straight, hip-length black hair. Their good looks,[18][19][20][21][22][13][23][11] as well as their femininity and androgyny,[5][16][23][11][24][7][25] are frequently commented on and emphasized. They are able to turn their own face into a skull,[26] as seen in various animations prior to Strive. Across their appearances, they have an overall Grim Reaper motif,[26][27][28] dressing almost exclusively in black clothing: previously, they wore a leather[27] outfit consisting of a midriff-baring top wrapped around their chest, a belted mantle covering their arms, and a mid-calf wrap skirt with gold grommets along the hem, connected by two belts across their thigh and secured by another at the waist. They have an arm warmer on one arm and a fingerless glove on the other, as well as a choker with silver studs and a pair of knee-high heeled boots.
In Strive, their redesign retains the overall idea, but changes the top for a sleeveless white shirt and jabot below a black waistcoat with silver buttons on the front flaps, connected to the black mantle over their forearms. Their skirt now has silver buttons and a number of brown belts around their waist with skull adornments. Retaining the black boots and arm warmer, they now wear fingerless gloves on both hands: a white glove on the right, and black on the left. On the sides of their mantle and the back of their gloves is a cross-like symbol featuring the word "compensate". Testament now also wears a black top hat, with a skull brooch on the band.
Testament wields a scythe in battle. In Guilty Gear, it had a silver blade and was held with the blade facing down, near their right leg. From Guilty Gear X onwards it is crimson red and is wielded with the blade level to their head, until Strive where the blade is once again held facing down.
Personality
Testament is a philanthropic, diligent, and curious individual who abhors violence. Especially fond of children, they try to provide shelter for those who have lost their homes, and prefer to find ways to reform and educate those who fall from the righteous path rather than blame and condemn them for their crimes.[29]
Kind and gentle,[10] Testament is a noble soul who places the needs of others before their own,[29] wanting to protect the innocent—remembering their oath as a knight even decades later—,[30] and dutifully wished to repay Kliff for his kindness.[12][31] Yet, the forced Gear conversion caused Testament to become extremely distrustful of humans and cynical.[30][32][33] The annihilation of mankind,[34] however, is not something they truly desired. Kliff attributed such madness to whatever Testament saw during the war,[12] but it was a command forcibly planted by Justice.
Because Testament had a strong will,[10] emotional fortitude,[29] and great love for their father,[12] they were semi-independent[34] from Justice's orders, retaining their consciousness and memory but unable to disobey.[29] Though their sense of self remained intact under Justice’s influence, much of their kind and selfless personality had been warped. They have little regard for their own life in their mission to revive Justice, using themself as a sacrifice with zero hesitation,[35] and they enjoy the violence they’re compelled to commit[8] despite their original pacifism, experiencing what they later describe as an "impulse for destruction".[36] Though they express a clear hatred of humanity, their love for their father[12] and fondness for children remains.[8]
After Justice's death, Testament regains their true self but is tormented by the horrific things they had done under her control, left only with a feeling of unbearable emptiness.[36][30][4] Choosing to isolate themself from humanity,[29] Testament latches onto the idea of protecting the innocent Dizzy, and later the Forest of Demons, as a new purpose in life.[1] Described as “dependent” by Faust,[37] Testament is extremely dedicated in their vow to protect Dizzy, seeing her as pure and innocent[38] and themself as her shield,[39] wishing to keep her from getting hurt and having to hurt others.[1] Even after accepting her desire for freedom, they often worry about her wellbeing,[40] though they tend to evade any offers to visit her and the Jellyfish Pirates.[38][2] Although they distrust and look down on humans, Testament is typically reluctant to fight them,[41] resorting to warnings and verbal intimidation first.[37][42][43] They try to avoid killing their opponents,[30] though they express difficulty in holding back[44][42][41] and affirm that killing men is a Gear's nature.[30] They also feel a certain kinship with fellow victims like Eddie[2] and Sol[45], considering them friends despite their instinctive aggression[46] towards the former and their dislike[10] of the latter.
Though they resolved to protect Dizzy and the Forest of Demons as a way to atone for their sins,[2] by Strive this ends up bringing back Testament's human sensibility[15] alongside support from the people in their life.[13] Eventually, living with the elderly couple that raised Dizzy[47] has brought Testament peace of mind,[15] and they no longer look on humans with hostility[47] and have come to terms with the past. They are notably calmer and less quick to anger, although they do not tolerate disrespect.[13] They are also much more sociable, often inviting others to join them for tea[17] and expressing a newfound sense of humor and enjoyment of life.[13]
Story
Background
Born in Switzerland[29] during the Crusades, Testament was orphaned at a young age and was taken in by Kliff Undersn, the long-time commander of the Sacred Order of Holy Knights.[12] Deeply grateful,[10] Testament intended to inherit Kliff's name and eventually become his successor.[29] In 2127,[48] in defiance of Kliff's wishes, Testament joined the Order,[48] volunteering despite their hatred for violence, thinking it would make their father happy.[12] Before Testament could make their intentions a reality,[29] in 2128, they met with an untimely end while carrying out a reserve unit's mission on behalf of the Order.[27] Their body was never found,[48] instead captured by government agents[29] of Nation A.[10] They became the subject of a number of experiments designed to develop new weapons,[49] and transformed into a Gear[29] regardless of their intention[10] by the Post-War Administration Bureau.[45] Although Testament managed to remain self-aware after the process,[49] it wasn't long before they turned their fangs toward humanity in accordance with Justice's command of eradicating mankind.[10]
Circa 2140,[note 2] Testament and Kliff met in the battlefield under unknown circumstances, but fighting on opposing sides, Kliff was forced to kill Testament. However, Testament survived the encounter[12]—somehow brought back to life for reasons unknown[29]—and continued to serve Justice, but they and Kliff wouldn't cross paths for the remainder of the war.[12] At some point, Testament presumably met Sol Badguy and learned that he was a Gear.[35]
In 2175, Justice was sealed in a dimensional prison by the Sacred Order, ending the Crusades. While a large majority of Gears became dormant[50] and others gained a will of their own,[51] Testament could not escape her influence. Still forced to comply with her directive, they resolved to free Justice[12] from her weakening seal[48] to resume her rampage.[35] Unknowingly manipulated by the Conclave,[52][15] Testament worked behind the scenes[31] of the Second Holy Order Selection Tournament organized by the United Nations[50][53] to gather enough energy to revive Justice.[31]
Guilty Gear
After the worldwide announcement in 2180, Testament frees Zato-ONE and Dr. Baldhead from prison so that they may participate,[54] telling Zato that he may be able to exact his revenge on Millia Rage, and returning Dr. Baldhead’s scalpel, which he then uses to impale them.[55] During the tournament, Testament appears before the winner—that is, Sol[53]—, revealing the deception, and that they require the blood of one more sacrifice. Sol defeats Testament, but is unable to stop Justice's resurrection as Testament sacrifices themself instead, using their blood to break Justice's seal.[35][12] In another account, Testament revives Justice, but as she is "incomplete", they offer their blood to her.[34] Ultimately, Justice is defeated by Sol and Ky Kiske,[56] killed by the former.[57]
In Kliff's ending, upon defeat, Testament tells their father to cheer up and seemingly dies. Before Kliff can follow his child to Hell, he defeats Justice, claiming responsibility for Testament. The dying Justice learns of their connection and that Testament's feelings for their father were, perhaps, the reason why her power was limited. After she breathes her last, Kliff dies, claiming his duty has been fulfilled at last.[12][note 3]
Guilty Gear X
Having regained their original personality due to Justice's death, Testament evades capture, but without a purpose to live, desperately wanders[10] into the village where Kliff is buried. While laying some flowers on their father's grave, Testament is approached by a priest who asks if they are a former Holy Order member. Testament denies this, and asks about the young girl accompanying him, soon noticing that the girl is blind. The girl introduces herself as Josephine, and Testament is immediately fond of her, asking her to address them as Kliff in lieu of their own name. While Testament is distracted, wondering if children like Josephine could be their new reason to live, Venom tries to kidnap Josephine to force Faust to join the Assassin's Guild. Testament protects Josephine, fleeing into the Forest of Demons where she introduces them to her friend, Dizzy. When Josephine is hurt, Testament and Dizzy take her to Faust's office at the village; while waiting, Testament and Dizzy bond over their pasts, and they reveal to the lonely Dizzy that they are also a Gear, as well as their true name. The villagers, led by the Priest, then try to kill Dizzy by burning Faust's office, and she loses control of Necro and Undine. Seeing her plight, Testament vows to be at Dizzy's side from now on, and subdues her.[1]
When Dizzy is rejected by Josephine as a demon, Testament accompanies her back into the forest.[1] Following the incident, in October 2181,[note 4] the world learns of her existence and Ky comes to investigate,[53] but after Dizzy defeats him,[63][53] a W$ 500,000 bounty is issued for her death.[64] Testament takes upon themself the duty of fighting off everyone who comes near, until she decides to leave the forest and accepts Johnny's offer to join the Jellyfish Pirates.[65]
In one alternate path, Testament and Dizzy's efforts somehow convince people not to come to the forest anymore; Dizzy wonders if it'll take humans a thousand years to forget about the Crusades, and Testament privately vows to protect her no matter how long it takes. In the other, Testament remembers Kliff's words about a knight's duties, and encourages Dizzy to leave the forest; in turn, she convinces Testament to come with her.[30]
Guilty Gear XX
Testament arrives on the May Ship unannounced to visit Dizzy, only to find that she's been knocked off the ship by I-No. Mistakenly cursing the crew's carelessness, Testament storms off to find Dizzy.[40] In one path, they find Dizzy dead, the one responsible killed by Johnny; in their grief, Testament kills Johnny and vows to annihilate humanity after laying Dizzy to rest in the Grove.[32] In another path, Slayer and Sol warn Testament that the P.W.A.B. and That Man have returned.[45] In their third path, Testament finds and frees the Necro-possessed Dizzy; after waking up, she defends her crew's innocence and Testament takes their leave before April and May meet with Dizzy, though she promises she'll come visit them soon.[38]
Some time later, Dizzy visits the Forest of Demons to deliver a letter to Testament, thanking them for helping her find happiness. After spending some time together, Dizzy admits she is concerned about rumors of bandits attacking the nearby village, but Testament says they're unable to help as they don't want to cause any bloodshed. They encourage Dizzy to do what she thinks is right, assuring her that if something goes wrong she can always come back to them. Before leaving, Dizzy mentions that she'll keep writing letters for Testament, and that it would make her happy if they lived somewhere she could send them. Testament says they will think about it and teleports away.[41] After the "bandit" situation is resolved, Testament confronts Johnny, who also encourages them to leave the Forest of Demons and to make some friends besides Dizzy. When they admit that he may be right, Johnny asks them to let him know where they decide to live, though Testament tells him not to worry and once again teleports away after responding to one of his jokes in kind. Once they're alone, they resolve to write a letter in response to Dizzy, noting that it's been about fifty years since they've written one.[66]
Guilty Gear XX Λ Core Plus
After leaving Dizzy with the Jellyfish Pirates, Testament goes back to protecting the forest, determined to keep it safe from invaders as atonement ("...Will the world ever forgive me?"). Their isolation is soon interrupted when Johnny and May bring Dizzy for a visit, but she loses control of Necro and Undine due to Crow's Justice imitation.[43] In one path, Testament pursues Crow but is unable to catch him, and returns to protect the forest, vowing to do so as long as they can.[67] In the other, after Slayer's warning, Testament returns to find the forest burning and resigns themself to die with it, sure that humans will bring about their own downfall in time.[68]
In Dizzy's first path, Testament warns Dizzy—who wants to learn about her origins—not to trust Ky. When she proves her determination to go with Ky, Testament tells her not to return for they are still unable to forgive humanity, but Dizzy believes there'll be a day when they can. They wish each other good luck and part ways.[33]
Guilty Gear Xrd
In the following years, Testament kept in touch with Johnny,[29] sometimes visiting him[47] and hanging around the May Ship II[69] despite Dizzy no longer living on board. For some time, Testament also watched over the elderly couple who once took care of Dizzy[15] before she and Testament met, though they avoided contact with the couple.[47]
Guilty Gear -Strive-
Testament now lives with the elderly couple who once took care of Dizzy, having accepted them over time.[47] They now have a job in construction, and are considering moonlighting as a fashion model.[13] This new life has brought them peace of mind and happiness.[29]
Story Mode
In the epilogue, Testament is seen visiting their family[29] at Dizzy and Ky's estate after the G4 Summit ends.[70]
Arcade Mode
Testament's Arcade Mode begins with them encountering Chipp Zanuff, who expresses suspicion towards them and their intentions. Testament insists that they are only interested in taking a stroll through the area, having some tea, and thinking about their new life. Surprised by their normalcy, Chipp relents and notes that both the scenery and Testament themself are "slick", and Testament thanks him before moving on. Testament then encounters Nagoriyuki, who they hoped they would be able to meet. Nagoriyuki is similarly suspicious of them, sensing great darkness in their heart, and questions what happened to Testament to make them change. Testament attributes their positive changes to having people in their life who accept them, admitting they used to act similarly to Nagoriyuki despite this. Testament then says they aren't there to fix Nagoriyuki, but they're willing to share their tea with him. In other routes, Testament instead wears Nagoriyuki down with small talk and jokes, until his mood lightens and he accepts their offer for tea.[13]
In A.B.A's Arcade Mode, Testament appears and expresses interest in her relationship with Paracelsus. A.B.A admits she is anxious about Paracelsus leaving her, and Testament warns her about the dangers of obsessing over another person. To their surprise, A.B.A is receptive to their advice, and reflects on her behavior and their relationship. In the rest of their presence in her Arcade Mode, they are mostly amused by A.B.A and Elphelt's "lively" behavior, repeatedly laughing during their conversations, all of which frightens Paracelsus. When Paracelsus asks them for help, they apologize and tell him they're only passing through.[71]
Guilty Gear Strive: Dual Rulers
Testament sends a letter, delivered in-person by Johnny, to Dizzy and Ky Kiske congratulating them on their wedding.[72]
After the attack on their wedding by Unika, Testament is in a video call with Elphelt Valentine, Faust, Delilah and Dr. Paradigm discussing how to break the seal placed on Ky Kiske and Dizzy.[73]
Later, a virus placed on Sin Kiske by Nerville Hammer causes Sin to send a command to every Gear to die. Testament, unable to resist the orders of a Command-Type Gear, is seen turning to stone.[74]
After recovering once the command was reversed, Testament is seen fighting off waves of Future Nerville's clones and protecting at least two unnamed humans during Nerville's attempt to purge all life on Earth.[75]
Testament can also then be seen leading strength to Sin and Unika as they use "Magic Resonance" during their final battle to defeat Nerville.[76]
Spin-off Story
Guilty Gear Dust Strikers
Testament encounters Gig, and, seeing that the Gear has lost all traces of humanity, defeats the creature. Before striking the fatal blow, they tell Gig that they accept the Gear's resentment and promise to fight against That Man when the day comes. After, they return to the forest they once lived in and reunite with Dizzy, who is also visiting the area. Dizzy reminisces fondly about her time with Testament in the forest before setting off once more to rejoin the Jellyfish Pirates; as she leaves, Testament wonders whether Dizzy might have ended up like Gig if she hadn't left the forest and made new friends.[77]
Guilty Gear Judgment
During their wanderings, Testament comes across an escapee of Raymond's experiments, who with his last breath begs them to help Isene. Testament, ashamed of their past as an ally of Justice, travels to the island in hopes of finding atonement through helping Isene's people.[78]
Testament travels to the village of Liberia and, finding it abandoned and overrun with monsters, resolves to seek out answers. They travel through a secret passage leading out of the village and into the Ashnay ruins, defeating one of Raymond's experiments along the way.[79] Within the ruins, they find Noel, a human forcibly fused with a monster, and though they sympathize with her plight they kill her to prevent her from harming anyone else.[80] With Noel dead, they're able to access the passage she was guarding and enter Ksanaka, the laboratory where Raymond has been performing his experiments on Isene's people. In the innermost portion of the laboratory, they are confronted by Marehound, a guardian monster created by Raymond. After defeating the beast, they find a logbook left behind by Raymond detailing his experiments on the people of Isene and his plans to become a god. Realizing that Raymond is the one behind the suffering of Isene's people, they travel to the Tower of Wind to confront him there.[81]
Atop the Tower of Wind, Raymond greets Testament, revealing he knows of their past and their status as an independent Gear, and tells them he wishes he could have experimented on them. Testament declares their intent to kill Raymond here and now, but Raymond mockingly tells them they're too late before fleeing through the now-open gate to the other world, leaving behind a trio of monsters to slow Testament down.[82]
Once they've defeated the monsters, Testament pursues Raymond into the other world. Though unnerved by the effect the other world has on them, as they fear it might mean there's no place for them among humankind, they follow Raymond further into its depths. There, they find him standing before the sleeping form of Inus, the king of the other world. Raymond tells Testament he intends to use Inus to become a god—however, before he can say more, Inus awakens and devours Raymond. The enraged Inus attempts to devour Testament as well, but they fight back and are able to kill the monster.
With Inus dead, Testament attempts to leave the other world. Before they can, however, they are startled by the sound of Raymond's voice once more. Before their eyes, Inus's corpse transforms into a monstrous, gray-skinned version of Raymond. Raymond, now calling himself Judgment, reveals to Testament that he'd planned for Testament to kill Inus all along: by allowing himself to be eaten by the beast, then having Inus killed, he was able to fuse with Inus's corpse from within and take the monster's power for himself without his consciousness being overwhelmed and destroyed by the monster's more powerful soul. Judgment declares himself the new ruler of both humanity and monsters and mockingly invites them to witness his new power before teleporting them to the entrance of his castle deep within the other world.[83]
Determined to stop him, Testament fights their way through Judgment's castle and into his throne room. There, Judgment battles them and, to his shock, is unable to defeat Testament. He demands to know how his godlike powers could have failed him, to which Testament points out the flaw in his master plan: Raymond's soul alone can't possibly sustain such massive power, and so the fusion between Raymond and Inus was always doomed to fail.[84] Judgment tries to deny Testament's logic, but to his horror his body begins to fail before his eyes—though he begs for Testament's help, he quickly dissolves into nothing.
With Judgment gone, the castle begins to collapse around Testament. Testament, still unsure of their place amid humanity, passively accepts the idea of dying in the other world, but before they can allow the falling rubble to kill them they are interrupted by the appearance of Dizzy, who unbeknownst to Testament had followed them into the other world. She tells them to follow her, leading them out of the Judgment's castle and back into the human world.
Back in the human world, Dizzy and Testament rest together on a hill overlooking the ocean. Dizzy expresses concern for Testament, who admits they've been thinking back to their time with Justice even though they swore to forget their past when they first met Dizzy. The Jellyfish Pirates arrive for Dizzy, and she invites Testament aboard the May Ship, telling them that Johnny has been wanting to them to visit. Testament decides that so long as Dizzy's happy, a drink with Johnny wouldn't hurt, and accept Dizzy's invitation.[84]
Abilities
Originally, Testament joined the Sacred Order of Holy Knights,[12] presumably learning the knights' techniques to combat Gears. After being converted into a Gear themself, Testament gained the abilities associated to these creatures: senses, healing and physical strength that surpass by far the average of a normal human's, and was rendered ageless. They are one of the few human-type Gears, and one of a small number who managed to remain self-aware after the injection of Gear cells;[49] even under Justice's control, Testament was a semi-independent Gear[85], due to their powerful force of will and emotional fortitude.[29]
Despite their powerful mind,[29] Testament was only a mid-class Gear after the conversion[12] and was easily defeated by Kliff. However, they somehow survived and became stronger than before.[29] Thanks to their rapid healing, Testament has a fighting style that relies on using their own blood for variety of moves, even creating from it the massive scythe they wield, though they no longer injure themself during battle as of Strive. Testament is also able to use force fields and bend time and space to move in and out of other dimensions. They are well-versed in advanced magic,[29] such as breaking dimensional prison-level seals,[50][35] and they can summon Succubi that shapeshift and attack during certain techniques. Previously, they summoned a single Succubus which mostly remained in the form of a crow unless attacking, but as of Strive they are now accompanied by two Succubi. Under normal conditions the teal Succubus conceals itself as a crow and hovers near Testament, while the pink Succubus forms the blade of their scythe.[86] Also at their disposal is EXE Beast.
Gameplay-wise, appearing as the sub-boss of Guilty Gear and Guilty Gear X, Testament previously belonged to the trap-laying archetype, able to pollute the screen with stationary attacks, projectiles, and disjointed hitboxes in order to force the opponent into a disadvantageous position and then apply pressure. In Strive, Testament has been reworked heavily, losing their invisible traps, but now able to put an opponent in the Stain State on contact with certain moves, which will cause an automatic follow-up attack.

Trivia
- Regarding Testament's gender, Arc System Works marketing rep Riku Ozawa has stated that Testament is specifically agender (無性, musei?), neither male nor female, and that the character was instead previously portrayed as androgynous (両性, ryōsei?), but that the team chose to change that in the new game. Ozawa also stated that in English, Testament would be referred to with they/them pronouns.[87][7] Both musei and ryōsei are categories of X-gender, the Japanese equivalent of the word 'non-binary'. Katano's Developer's Backyard further confirms that after undergoing surgical modification and being turned into a Gear, Testament has lived without the concept of gender.[11]
- In an Arc System Works Fan Club [HYPER] newsletter, sometime prior to 2002, Daisuke Ishiwatari was told that fans were sending in postcards asking about Testament's gender. In response, he reportedly said that Testament was "...androgynous (両性具有, ryōseiguyū?). Weeell, it's actually a matter of having transcended human existence. Just like me."[88]
- In the popularity polls included in Arc System Works 25th Anniversary Official Character Collection, Testament is listed in both the male and female character polls.[89]
- On Testament's Asura System TCG character cards, a question mark is used instead of a gender symbol.[90]
- Testament shares their name with American thrash-metal band Testament.[91] Prior to Strive, the word "low" could be seen on the back of their mantle, possibly referencing the band's 1994 album and song of the same name. One of their Overdrive Attacks in Strive, Nostrovia, may also be a reference to another one of the band's songs.
- One of Testament's early designs labels them as 'Blackmore',[28] likely referencing English guitarist Ritchie Blackmore.
- One of their Overdrives, Master of Puppets, shares its name with the 1986 album and song by Metallica. The band may have also been referenced by Ky's Overdrive Ride the Lightning.
- Their second Instant Kill, Seventh Sign, could be a reference to Yngwie Malmsteen's album of the same name. Malmsteen may have also been referenced by Ky's second Instant Kill, Rising Force.[91]
- The move Unholy Diver is likely a reference to the song and album "Holy Diver" by American heavy metal band Dio.
- Testament's dislike for Sol isn't due to anything he personally did to Testament, but rather, it is because Kliff revered Sol in his youth and it became a complex for Testament, who feels similarly about Kliff.[27][31]
- Testament has the most amount of hobbies in the series, having a record number of 36 in Strive, showing how much they are enjoying life now. Since the reveal, the development team has enjoyed the many pieces of fanart of Testament enjoying their hobbies.[11]
- Costumes based on Testament's Strive look appear in Tales of the Rays, for Duke Panterei, and in Soulworker, for Lily.
- Testament has made a guest appearance in the game Elemental Story.
