Leopaldon is a mysterious character that has only appeared in Guilty Gear Isuka as the boss of the game's Arcade Mode. It is an entity composed of a Gear fused with a female dog and a drum-beating sorcerer. [1] The name Leopaldon refers to the Gear body, not the dog or sorcerer. [2][3]

Design

The Gear is a massive, white-scaled creature with red eyes, muscular limbs, and brown fur that covers its hands and nether regions (with a tuft of fur sticking out its backside, which acts as its tail). It sports black tattoos on its shoulders, tan bandages around its forearms, and black open-toed boots on its feet. Its massive mouth is full of big yellow teeth and brown threads connecting its gums to its lips. As the sorcerer and the dog reside within the Gear's mouth, the Gear keeps its mouth perpetually open wide. The only time it's shown with its mouth not like this is in its introduction animation, where it pops out of a pile of snow shaped like a Greek head bust.

The dog is brown-furred with a dark nose. On its head is a piece of black headwear reminiscent of a gimp mask. On the parts of the headwear where the eyeholes would be are two red ornaments that look like ball gags. Since it's fused with the Gear, its head is the only part of its body that's seen most of the time. The only time its full body is shown is in Leopaldon's win animation, where the Gear kneels and the dog momentarily defuses with it to pant.

The sorcerer is a red-eyed humanoid clad in black armor that perpetually beats on a big brown drum.

Personality

The Gear appears to have no personality of its own. Its instincts are that of the dog, but its movements are determined by the sorcerer. Because of this, it merely serves as the "body" of Leopaldon. Its only real characteristics are its ability to cause destruction on a massive scale, and its ability to control other Gears.[1]

The dog is not known to have any traits beyond that of a common dog, and not much has been said about the sorcerer in general. However, they use the power of the Gear to help people living in the extreme polar conditions of their region. [1][2]

Story

There is very little information on Leopaldon. Originally a huge white Gear, it consumed a female dog and fused with it as a result. A mysterious man, simply called a "sorcerer" (ソーサラー, Sōsarā?),[3] is also fused with the Gear. They have used their power to help people in harsh living conditions.

The game's tagline is presented thusly: "A new Gear arises, its name Leopaldon. As they threaten to lay waste to the world, you prepare to mount your offense."[4]

The confrontation takes place in Antarctica, Leopaldon's stage.

Abilities

Leopaldon is extremely resilient, as the Gear's belly is impervious to all attacks; the game reads all attacks directed there as a Guard. To defeat them, one must attack the sorcerer and the dog; as they're stationed in the Gear's open mouth, they can only be defeated by aerial attacks. They can also be hurt by hitting their back by using a teleportation attack. Their main technique are claw swipes, as well as forming walls of ice or fire stones via magic spells.

The giant Gear is thought to be extremely powerful, due to its large size and destructive attacks such as Perfect Rainbow, a laser that is belched from its mouth.

Trivia

  • In an interview, Daisuke Ishiwatari said that he believed the dog to be female, as he wants all bosses in the series to be women. [5] This appears to have been true prior to this, as the dog is referred to as female as early as 2009. [2]
  • In a 2024 interview, Daisuke Ishiwatari was asked if there was a chance for Leopaldon to make a return to the series. The reply given indicated that no character is entirely out of the question. [6]
