This bed is... all I have left of my brother.

Bedman? is a playable character within the Guilty Gear series. Originally the bedframe used by Bedman during the events of Guilty Gear Xrd -Sign- and Guilty Gear Xrd - Revelator-, it was reprogrammed by Bedman in his dying moments to act independently and to protect his sister, Delilah.[1] Bedman? made its full appearance in Guilty Gear -Strive-'s Another Story and became playable in Strive as a DLC character alongside Delilah.

Design

Bedman? was the Reinforced High-Density Bed Frame of Bedman and retains the majority of its features, though it is now heavily damaged. There are numerous cracks and dents all over its body along with stains and rust, and many of its spikes have been broken off. Its movements are far more erratic and sluggish than before due to the damage it took during Bedman's final battle.[2]

The screws on its face are now missing and the damage done to the left side of its face has revealed a glowing red eye within. The king's crown on its head has been replaced by a pure black and distorted queen's crown which hovers above its head.

During the events of Another Story, its right arm is heavily damaged and becomes generally unusable, its inner components visible due to the extent of the damage.[3] Bedman? has a mouth with crooked teeth and gums which can be seen during its reaction to Faust's Bone-Crushing Excitement in Strive or when Bedman uses Sinusoidal Helios in Xrd.

Personality

Though Bedman? seemingly does not have a personality as it is incapable of complex communication and storage of daily memories,[1] it is fully intent on protecting Delilah and occasionally performs actions reminiscent of comforting her.[3] It is incredibly belligerent and aggressive towards anything it deems a threat to Delilah, often going overboard when protecting her.[4] It is self-destructive and has no regard for any damage it takes while protecting Delilah, usually ignoring her pleas for it to stop.

Story

Background

During his dying moments, Bedman reprogrammed the bedframe to allow it to act independently and to protect Delilah. It takes action to help her during her rampage and she later recovers it.[1]

Guilty Gear Xrd

Bedman? was created by the Sanctus Maximus Populi, Ariels[5] as the Reinforced High-Density Bed Frame of Bedman. It served as his weapon and method of interacting with the world up until his death, where it was heavily damaged by the combined attacks of Robo-Ky and Venom.[2] As Bedman dies, he reprograms the bedframe to allow it to act independently and to protect Delilah.[1]

Guilty Gear -Strive-

While Ramlethal Valentine, Baiken, and Sin Kiske are determining the best way of dealing with Delilah's rampage, Bedman? suddenly appears, attacking them. It continues to fight with them until Sin points out that Delilah is crying and convinces it that they are there to help save her. Bedman? teleports up to Delilah and creates a field to buy the group time as they plan a solution to her rampage. Over time, Bedman? struggles to contain Delilah's powers and its right hand breaks from the stress of its actions. Once Bedman? sees that the earlier group has combined forces with the Jellyfish Pirates to enact a plan to save Delilah, Bedman? extends one of its fingers to Delilah and she hugs it. It then plummets to the ground where it stays for the remainder of Another Story.[3]

After Delilah is calmed down, the rain falling on Bedman? gives it the appearance of crying. Delilah later collects it and keeps it, though the damage it sustained during her rampage remains unrepaired.[1]

During Bedman's Arcade Mode, Bedman? seeks out powerful opponents in an attempt to be destroyed. After Delilah begs it not to be destroyed, it stops, no longer seeking its own destruction.[6]

Trivia

  • Bedman? is the first and only character within the Guilty Gear series to be accompanied by another character that doesn't fight and has no effect within battles, this being Delilah.
  • While stated to be reprogrammed prior to its user's death, it is commonly theorized that the bedframe is possessed by Bedman.
    • According to Strive's producer Ken Miyauchi, it contains "part of Bedman's spirit", but is not Bedman himself.[7]
  • In an interview conducted after Bedman?'s release, Daisuke Ishiwatari stated that the concept of Bedman?'s current state takes some inspiration from Annabelle from The Conjuring series.[8]
  • Bedman?'s special move names are reminiscent of callable functions within computer programming languages which involve the use of the "call" command.
