Repeat after me: “I’m bored.”
― Asuka R♯ to Asuka R. Kreutz[src]

Asuka R♯ is a playable character in the Guilty Gear series, appearing in Guilty Gear -Strive-. He is a clone made by Asuka R. Kreutz, a scientist involved in the Gear Project and considered by many to be responsible for the hundred-year war known as the Crusades, and shares his creator's appearance, memories, and magical abilities.[3]

Design

While near-identical in appearance to Asuka R. Kreutz, Asuka R♯'s design features some minor differences that set him apart from his original. Asuka R♯ dons a similar haori to that of Asuka R. Kreutz, though his is red instead of teal. The rest of his outfit follows a similar pattern, with any teal accents in Asuka R. Kreutz's clothing instead being red in Asuka R♯'s clothes. The one exception to this is the two's cloaks: where Asuka R. Kreutz's cloak is teal, Asuka R♯'s is pure white. Additionally, the cross decorating Asuka R♯'s cassock is orange instead of the original's turquoise. The Cross Patonce gem pendant he wears has been changed from silver and red to gold and turquoise, and the second strand of his belt is orange instead of purple.

Outside of his outfit, most of the differences setting Asuka R♯ apart from his creator show in his head and facial features. While Asuka R. Kreutz has silver-white hair, a golden left eye, and five vibrant red wings over his right eye, Asuka R♯ possesses cream-colored hair and a turquoise left eye, and the emblem covering or replacing his right eye is surrounded by five pale pink wings instead of the original's red. His eyebrows also slightly differ in shape.

The final change to Asuka R♯'s appearance is in the staff he wields containing the replica Tome of Origin. While Asuka R. Kreutz's staff has gold rings with a bright purple outer edge and silver hands on the end, Asuka R♯'s swaps these colors around. His version of the staff features silver and green rings with gold hands.

Overall, Asuka R♯'s outfit more closely resembles the clothes worn by Asuka R. Kreutz in Strive's Story Mode than the outfit worn by the playable version of Asuka R. Kreutz does.

Personality

Asuka R♯ was created by Asuka R. Kreutz in his own image. He inherits his creator's memories and much of his personality,[3] but with several key differences: Asuka R♯ is more talkative than the original Asuka R. Kreutz,[5] has a greater sense of curiosity,[3] and has a more positive self-image and more optimistic outlook than his creator.[6] Thanks to these differences, he's able to make decisions and come to conclusions that the original Asuka R. Kreutz would not, often puzzling his creator.[3] The differences between them initially concern Asuka R♯, as he recognizes that they're a result of Asuka R. Kreutz's dissatisfaction with his own personality, leaving him worried that his original has no desire to live and created R♯ to be a replacement for him after he's gone.[7] However, by sparring with R. Kreutz, he's able to recognize that his creator does still have a desire to live and that the two of them can coexist.

Though he's often critical of Asuka R. Kreutz,[8] Asuka R♯ cares deeply for his creator, challenging Asuka R. Kreutz's negative self-image and encouraging him to embrace life and the people who care about him despite his guilt over his past actions. Asuka R♯ also believes strongly in the importance of accepting one's emotions, despite the "unscientific" nature of feelings, and seeks to prove their value to Asuka R. Kreutz.[9]

Asuka R♯ finds questions of right and wrong exceptionally confusing, a result of his personality formation and level of life experience being out of sync, and is frustrated by this aspect of himself.[10]

Despite his being a meaningfully different person from his creator, Asuka R♯ still considers himself to share his creator's identity as "Asuka",[11] at least for the time being.[12]

Story

Background

At some point, Asuka R. Kreutz, inspired by his admiration of artificial lifeforms such as A.B.A and the Universal Will's Valentine Series creations: Valentine, Ramlethal Valentine, and Elphelt Valentine, decides to try his own hand at creating life.[13] The eventual result of these experiments is Asuka R♯, a clone of himself who shares his physical appearance, memories, and magic, but differs from him in terms of personality.[3]

Guilty Gear -Strive-

Asuka R♯, living alongside his creator within Tír na nÓg, begins to wonder at Asuka R. Kreutz's motivation for creating him. Realizing the depths of Asuka R. Kreutz's self-hatred, he grows worried that his creator has no desire to continue living and that he exists to be a replacement for the original Asuka R. Kreutz.[7]

Motivated by the memories of Sol Badguy that he inherited from his creator,[14] Asuka R♯ decides to forego talking and instead test his creator's desire to live via combat: he creates a number of un-self-aware combat simulation duplicates of people using Asuka R. Kreutz's memories as a base as well as a combat-tuned data simulation version of himself,[3] and challenges his creator to defeat them. Though uncomfortable with combat, when his survival is at stake Asuka R. Kreutz fights and defeats the limiter-disabled data simulation version of himself, reassuring Asuka R♯ of his desire to live.[15]

Currently, Asuka R♯ is on Earth, gathering data to send back to Tír na nÓg for the sake of Asuka R. Kreutz's new research into the Battle Method Turing test.[3]

Abilities

Asuka R♯ has skills and scientific knowledge on par with his creator, making him one of the world's most powerful magic wielders.[4] Like the original Asuka R. Kreutz, he's capable of creating artificial life.[3] In contrast to his immense intelligence magical ability, he's incredibly physically weak and quickly grows tired from even the slightest exercise. For this reason, he's built a number of custom-made devices to handle physically-demanding tasks for him.[4]

As a playable character, he is a unique-type fighter with a special gauge, Mana, that allows him to use Spells, and a number indicating which of three 'Test Cases' (that is, three different sets of spells) he has selected. They are roughly specialized, giving him access to projectiles, reversals, mix-ups, or status tools. While these are excellent for screen coverage and zoning, his mana is limited, and if depleted, he becomes extremely vulnerable.

Trivia

  • The symbol "♯" in his name is musical notation called a sharp. It is read with the German pronunciation / kreuz /.[2]
  • In Guilty Gear Strive, by pressing "up" at the character select screen, the player can change Asuka's name between "Asuka R♯" and "Asuka R. Kreutz". The choice changes his intros and outros with certain characters,[16] but is otherwise only cosmetic.
