Valentine
I don't feel good... I don't feel good... I don't feel good... All of you, enough is enough!
― Valentine[src]
Valentine is a major character in Guilty Gear 2 -Overture-. A near-duplicate of Aria Hale, Valentine largely lacks much apparent personality, frequently mumbles and almost only speaks to others to explain her actions. She is accompanied by Lucifero, who takes the form of a balloon.
Design
Her style of dress is somewhat similar to gothic lolita fashion.[7] She also wears headgear that resembles a pair of bat's wings. Her appearance is almost identical to that of her template, Aria Hale, differing mainly in that Valentine has two white antenna-like organs extending from her head,[1] and red eyes as opposed to Aria's green.
Personality
As she was born in the Backyard, Valentine initially lacked emotion[8] and was therefore unable to lie[1] as well as coming across as intimidatingly doll-like.[9][10] When questioned about her purpose, she generally says that she is running 'errands' for her mother.[1][11] However, when Sol and company pursue Valentine to the Backyard, she begins to feel irritation towards them and discards her assigned purpose,[12] developing her first emotions in the process: frustration and rage.[8][12]
Story
Background
Valentine was created by the Universal Will with the goal of the destruction of humanity,[1][3] using Aria Hale as a template[13] and achieving a near-identical physical appearance to her by eliminating almost every difference between them.[1] Following the completion of her body, her soul was formed, and, upon her acquisition of language, she spoke her first word: 'mother'. Her similarity to Aria went beyond her physical appearance, as she recalled some of Aria's memories, specifically her love for Frederick, although she ceases this 'process' following a declaration that emotions are 'incomprehensible'. She then confirms the 'errand' that she has been assigned, and begins to search for a 'key', before realising that she could not exit the Backyard. Upon this realisation, she begins to wander aimlessly and encounters Lucifero, and states her purpose. After more wandering, Valentine finds an exit from the Backyard, which she jumps into without hesitation.[1]
Guilty Gear 2 -Overture-
Following her exit from the Backyard, Valentine and her Vizuel army[14] begin to 'sublimate' Gears[15] in her search for the 'key', the pure Gear cells of Justice present in the Maiden of the Grove, so that she can enter the Cube.[16] In order to reach the Maiden, she leads the Vizuel in an assault on Illyria, and encounters Sol, Sin, and Izuna. Although she declares the three to have 'low' ability, she notes that the response of the 'key' became stronger upon their arrival before teleporting away.[17] She later encounters the three following Sol's fight with Raven, and, after her second defeat at their hands, experiences pain for the first time, teleporting away after stating that she needs to 'reorganize' herself.[11] Valentine then fights Sol and Dr. Paradigm at Ganymede, and is defeated a third time.[18]
After these battles, Valentine leads the Vizuel in an attack on Illyria Castle to obtain the 'key',[16] and, rather than trying to acquire the Maiden of the Grove, kidnaps Sin,[19] who, as the Maiden's son, has inherited her Gear cells, and is therefore a suitable substitute for the 'key'.[14] Having used Paradigm's brainwashed companions and the Vizuel to buy herself time, Valentine teleports to Bel Canto Valley with an unconcious Sin.[14] In the Valley, she takes the 'key' from Sin's body[20] and takes control of him, commanding him to kill Sol and Izuna.[21] Despite the duo's defeat of the brainwashed Sin, Valentine disappears into the depths of the Backyard, leaving a massive army of Vizuel to guard herself.[20]
While Sin, Ky and Ky's army fight the Vizuel,[20] Sol, Paradigm and Izuna follow Valentine to the Backyard with the assistance of That Man,[4] preventing her from opening the Cube. Their arrival causes her to ponder her existence and develop emotions, questioning if the 'value' for her reason to exist is 'low', and wondering if she cannot fulfill her purpose without an understanding of feelings. She recognises these thoughts as frustration,[8] and transforms into a giant robotic[9] form to fight Sin (who had arrived via a portal created by Ky),[20][8] Izuna, and Paradigm. After the ensuing fight, Valentine states herself to be purposeless, and declares her mother's desires to be irrelevant to her before transforming again into her several hundred meter tall[9] third form, in which she fights Sol. During this battle, Aria's memories and emotions manifest themselves as voices surrounding several humanoid Valentines and Sol in a pitch-black environment. Upon her defeat by Sol, she calls him Frederick, and tells him 'it's okay' before fading away.[12]
In the epilogue, That Man says to Raven that the next Universal Will attack will be more difficult to handle. Raven agrees, expecting that it would be much harder to find the next Valentine, to which That Man replies that it could be the other way around, and that 'tens of thousands' of Valentines would appear.[13]
Abilities
Valentine fights using Lucifero, a being from the Backyard who appears in the form of a balloon.[22] Lucifero seems to have magical abilities, such as shapeshifting into a mace-like weapon for melee attacks, firing projectiles in form of missiles and energy bursts, and teleportation. She also has access to the Soul Sinker system, which allows her to bring her own Masterghost (soul) into physical reality as well as create her servants, including the Vizuel.[17][23] It is commented that her magical energy is incredibly high[8] and, due to having been born in the Backyard, she can use spells that are outside the realm of conventional knowledge,[24][25] to the point where Sol and Sin cannot dispel her seals or barriers and could not harm her with magical attacks until Izuna modified their abilities.[23] She can also brainwash others in a manner seemingly similar to a command-type Gear,[26][27] using said ability on Izuna's Yokai friends,[26] Dr. Paradigm's Gear companions,[14] and Sin.[21] She can sublimate (disassemble)[28] Gears, causing them to vanish.[15] She is capable of transforming into a large mecha-like form[8] and transforming further into a massive, multi-limbed 'airship',[12] both of which increase her offensive abilities.

Quotes
Much like a majority of her actions, Valentine's quotes are generally rather blunt. In the game, if Valentine is left idle, she and Lucifero will chat.
Allusions
- Her name may be a reference to Dutch musician Robby Valentine.
- The text 'Nonsugar' present throughout her design and those of some of her servants could reference Robby Valentine's album No Sugar Added.
- Her moves Cassius, Judas and Brutus are likely named after Gaius Cassius Longinus, Judas Iscariot and Marcus Junius Brutus, the three figures Satan is depicted as chewing on in Dante's Inferno.
- The name of her move Untie the Chains of Chilon may reference Lord Byron's poem The Prisoner of Chillon.[note 2]
Trivia
- Valentine is the only character who has three musical themes of her own in a single release.
- Her design was intially based on school uniform,[9] with her appearance in the final game being inspired by undead characters from real-time strategy games as well as gothic lolita fashion.[7]
- In a piece of concept artwork, Valentine is labelled as 'Dead Elf Master',[9] which may have been what she was referred to as during the game's development before her name was finalised.
- The Guilty Gear 2 -Overture- Material Collection includes unused variants of Valentine's voicelines for Judas, Brutus and Cassius which include the names of the the three musketeers from Dumas' d'Artagnan Romances (Athos, Aramis and Porthos respectively).[9]
- In several of Valentine's Japanese in-battle quotes, she says ぷしゅけー (pushukē?, psyche) and ぷねうま (puneuma?, pneuma) in place of 魂? (soul) and 霊? (soul) respectively, and そーま (sōma?, soma) in place of 肉体? (body), all of which are Greek words for those concepts (ψυχή, πνεύμα and σώμα respectively).
- Some of Valentine's attacks are shared with other Valentines:
- Her Overdrive, Calvados, is also used by Jack-O' and Ramlethal (although Ramlethal's version is less similar to Valentine's than Jack-O's).
- Ramlethal uses a version of Cassius, one of Valentine's special attacks.
- Jack-O' uses Untie the Chains of Chilon, another one of Valentine's specials (named 'Remove the Chain of Chiron' in Xrd),[note 2] and Valentine's skill Zest (as well as an aerial variant of it).
- Valentine's design inspired that of the woman featured on the cover of the second volume of the Guilty Gear 2 -Overture- Original Soundtrack.[29]
- In the BlazBlue series, the female lead, Noel Vermillion, is pursed by Litchi Faye-Ling, who forces her to don bizarre outfits upon catching up to her. The last outfit she forces her into is Valentine's.

Notes
- ↑ Listed as reddish-brown in her in-game profile,[2] but appear as red on her in-game model and in all official illustrations.
- ↑ 2.0 2.1 While Jack-O's similar move is translated as 'Remove the Chains of Chiron' in Xrd, this is likely a mistranslation, as Chiron was never depicted as chained or imprisoned.
