Baiken/Commands

Tethering (連結, Renketsu?, lit. Attach) is a unique mechanic for Baiken in Guilty Gear -Strive-.

By using her ground throw (Without holding Dust) or the Slash version of Kabari, Baiken ties her opponent up with a red-and-black elastic rope, which has a bell on the end when using the Kabari version.

Once her opponent is tethered to her, they cannot move away from Baiken by a certain distance - should they try, they get sprung back towards her by the equivalent of a single forward step - this applies to Baiken too, as she cannot move further away from her opponent without dragging them with her. After 3 seconds, the rope automatically breaks.

What's useful about tethering opponents is being able to use the momentum from back-dashing, or using moves like Tatami Gaeshi to spring the opponent back down, being able to continue an otherwise impossible combo under normal circumstances, especially with them not being able to stay away from her for a short time.

Tatami Gaeshi (畳返し, Tatami Gaeshi?, lit. Straw-Mat Return) was first introduced in the original Guilty Gear.

Originally written as (畳替し, Tatami Gaeshi?, lit. Straw-Mat Refacer).

Baiken slams her heel on the floor, summoning a tatami mat that tilts up, then crashes back down, launching the opponent on contact. If used in the air, the mat crashes down from the air. Only in the original Guilty Gear, Baiken can charge Tatami Gaeshi by inputting DownDown RightRight and holding Respect instead of . At level 2, Baiken creates two mats in a row, and level 3 creates three mats in a line.
Triple Tatami Gaeshi
The three-mat version would return in the Guilty Gear XX series as EX Baiken, which would go on to be dubbed Triple Tatami Gaeshi (三枚畳替し, Sanmai Tatami Gaeshi?, lit. Three-Ply Straw-Mat Refacer), though this can only be used on the ground in the latter series. This later version, when used as EX Baiken, launches the opponent while knocking them away.

Youzansen (妖斬扇, Yō Zan Sen?, lit. Calamity-Cutting Fan) was first introduced in the original Guilty Gear.

Baiken swings a blade around in a circle. In the original Guilty Gear, Baiken flips backwards while holding her sword upside-down. In later versions, Baiken swings a long blade around that she had tucked in her rear sleeve; GGX - XX had a straight sword, while REV 2 & -STRIVE- make the sword more intricate, having a hooked edge.

Kabari (蚊鉤, Kabari?, lit. Fishing Fly) was first introduced in the original Guilty Gear.

Originally known as Kamaitachi (鎌鼬, Kama Itachi?, lit. Sickle Weasel).

Baiken swings her rear arm forward, releasing a three-fingered metal claw on a chain towards her opponent.

In the original Guilty Gear, if the claw hits the opponent, she draws them closer, then slashes them away. In later iterations, Baiken simply pulls her opponent closer, leaving them temporarily stunned.

GGX & XX

If the claw hits the opponent, she pulls them closer to her, leaving them temporarily stunned.

As of Guilty Gear XX up to REV 2, Baiken is able to follow up with Tetsuzan Sen (鉄斬扇, Tetsu Zan Sen?, lit. Iron-Slashing Fan), launching her opponent up with one slash, then bats them away with another. In REV 2, Baiken swipes her sword up as she puts the dull edge against her shoulder, creating a purple shockwave that launches the opponent.

GGXrd

As well as the straight version, still dedicated to the Heavy Slash button, Kabari gains a Slash version, which acts as an anti-air and pulls the opponent closer to her. On top of this: Baiken gains 2 new follow-ups for both versions, as well as Tetsuzan Sen:
  • Himawari (閑割, Hima Wari?, lit. Casual Match) - Baiken rushes forward. If she's within close range to her opponent, she grabs them by their face, jumps high, then slams them on the ground, causing a floor bounce; in Samurai Shodown (2019), it simply causes a hard knockdown.
  • Rokkon Sogi (六根削ぎ, Rokkon Sogi?, lit. Severing of the Six Senses) - Baiken rapidly slashes her opponent, traversing through them to the other side of the screen. This move is also a follow-up to both Azami & Suzuran.

GGST

While she would retain the Slash version, it would be changed so that she flings out a large golden bell attached to a red-and-black rope. If it connects, her opponent will get tethered to her for 3 seconds.
Heavy Slash Kabari's follow-up
The Heavy Slash version retains Rokkon Sogi as a follow-up, though it goes unnamed in-game.

Zakuro (斬凶輅, Za Ku Ro?, lit. Evil-Slashing Carriage) was first introduced in Guilty Gear X, and last seen Guilty Gear XX Λ Core Plus R.

Zakuro
Baiken stabs her opponent diagonally upwards with a 5-bladed jumonji spear coming out of her rear kimono sleeve, shredding the opponent with the spinning blades. The opponent gets launched on the last hit.

This is also used as a follow-up to Suzuran.

Mawari-komi (回り込み, Mawarikomi?, lit. Wrap-around) was first introduced in Guilty Gear X, and last seen in Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2.

Baiken slides forwards. If she's close to her opponent, she traverses through them to the other side of the screen.

This is also used as a follow-up to Suzuran & Azami.

Sakura (裂羅, Saku Ra?, lit. Demon Render) was first introduced in Guilty Gear X, and last seen in Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2.

Baiken turns to face away from her opponent, then stabs them with her sword in a reverse grip.

This is also used as a follow-up to Suzuran & Azami.

Suzuran (爵走, Suzu Ran?, lit. Running Baron) was first introduced in Guilty Gear X, and last seen in Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2.

Baiken runs towards her opponent while holding her sword upside-down; in Rev 2, Baiken holds the sheath in her mouth while she dashes, with the sound of a shamisen being strummed twice upon activation. While running, Baiken is nigh-invincible, and she can follow up with the below attacks:
  • Zakuro (斬凶輅, Za Ku Ro?, lit. Evil-Slashing Carriage) - Baiken shifts forward and does a rising, turning slash. Can only be done in GGX & XX series.
  • Kuchinashi (口無, Kuchinashi?, lit. Words Unspoken) - Baiken shifts forward and does a rising, turning slash. Can only be done in REV 2.
  • Mawari-komi (回り込み, Mawarikomi?, lit. Wrap-around) - Baiken slides through her opponent, appearing on the other side.
  • Sakura (裂羅, Saku Ra?, lit. Demon Render) - Baiken stabs her opponent while facing away from them.
  • Ouren (邑煉, Ō Ren?, lit. Old Village) - Baiken flips over her opponent, then slashes her opponent overhead before she lands. Can only be done in GGX & XX series.
  • Rokkon Sogi (六根削ぎ, Rokkon Sogi?, lit. Severing of the Six Senses) - Baiken rapidly slashes her opponent, traversing through them to the other side of the screen. Can only be done in REV 2.
  • Baku (, Baku?, lit. Restrain) - Baiken does a palm thrust, imprinting the kanji of the move's name. Can only be done in GGX & XX series.
  • Yasha Gatana (夜叉刀, Yasha Gatana?, lit. Yaksha Sword) - Baiken pulls out a long handgun, firing a spherical flaming shot that slightly pushes the opponent back. Can only be done in REV 2.
  • Metsudo Kushodo (滅度九正道, Metsudo Ku Shō Dō?, lit. The True Ninth Path to Nirvana) - Baiken fires five grappling hooks out of her rear kimono sleeve. If used close-range to the opponent, she uses them to pull her to the other side of the screen while charging through her opponent. Can only be done in REV 2.

The follow-ups in REV 2 can also be used during Azami.

Youshijin (妖刺陣, Yō Shi Jin?, lit. Calamity-Calling Array) was first introduced in Guilty Gear XX, and last seen in Guilty Gear XX Λ Core Plus R.

Youshijin
Baiken puts her rear arm to the floor, making a bow-and-arrow-shaped blade on a gold chain quickly rise diagonally upwards, launching her opponent on contact.

Ouren (邑煉, Ō Ren?, lit. Old Village) was first introduced in Guilty Gear XX Λ Core, and last seen in Guilty Gear XX Λ Core Plus R.

Ouren
Baiken flips over her opponent, then slashes her opponent overhead before she lands.

This is also used as a follow-up to Suzuran.

Azami (亞坐身, A Za Mi?, lit. Sitting Blade) was first introduced - and last seen in Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2, with the exception of Samurai Shodown (2019).

Baiken turns her back to her opponent, slinging her sword over her shoulder. This can be done while standing, crouching, or in the air. She can hold the stance for up to 2 seconds by holding SlashHeavy Slash; if used in the air, the speed she falls is drastically slowed down. If the opponent hits her while she's in this stance, she takes no damage and can attack straight afterwards using the following attacks:
  • Kuchinashi (口無, Kuchinashi?, lit. Words Unspoken) - Baiken shifts forward and does a rising, turning slash. Can only be done after standing/crouching Azami.
  • Mawari-komi (回り込み, Mawarikomi?, lit. Wrap-around) - Baiken slides through her opponent, appearing on the other side. Can only be done after standing/crouching Azami.
  • Sakura (裂羅, Saku Ra?, lit. Demon Render) - Baiken stabs her opponent while facing away from them. Can only be done after standing/crouching Azami.
  • Rokkon Sogi (六根削ぎ, Rokkon Sogi?, lit. Severing of the Six Senses) - Baiken rapidly slashes her opponent, traversing through them to the other side of the screen. Can only be done after standing/crouching Azami.
  • Yasha Gatana (夜叉刀, Yasha Gatana?, lit. Yaksha Sword) - Baiken pulls out a long handgun, firing a spherical flaming shot that slightly pushes the opponent back. Can only be done after standing/crouching Azami.
  • Tsubaki (鍔氣, Tsuba Ki?, lit. Spirit Lance) - Baiken does a spinning slash while moving forward slightly, spinning the opponent out on contact. Can only be done after aerial Azami.
  • Kikyo (鬼経, Ki Kyō?, lit. Ogre Split) - Baiken does a falling slash while moving forward slightly, causing a hard knockdown to the opponent while landing on her butt. Can only be done after aerial Azami.
Can be done after both versions of Azami.

The grounded follow-ups, as well as Metsudo Kushodo, can also be used during Suzuran.

Hiiragi (, Hiiragi?, lit. Holly) was first introduced in Guilty Gear -Strive-.

Baiken raises her arm to chest-height. If she is hit up-close by a physical attack, she grabs her opponent by the back of their head, swings them around, then sharply slams their face down by her front foot, not unlike Himawari.

However, if she is hit at long-range, she swats the opponent's attack back, leaving them in a pseudo-Guard Crush state.

Note: This cannot parry projectiles or grabs.

Baku (, Baku?, lit. Restrain) was first introduced in Guilty Gear XX Λ Core, and last seen in Guilty Gear XX Λ Core Plus R.

Also one of her Overdrives in the Guilty Gear X series.

Baku
Baiken does a palm thrust, imprinting the kanji of the move's name. This can be followed up by:
  • Sakura (, Sakura?, lit. Cherry Blossom) - Baiken takes out a hanafuda card, then pushes the opponent, disabling their ability to jump for 14 seconds, indicated by the color blue.
  • Tsuki (, Tsuki?, lit. Moon) - Baiken takes out a hanafuda card, then pushes the opponent, making every hit Baiken does a Counter Hit for 14 seconds, indicated by the color yellow.
  • Tsuru (, Tsuru?, lit. Crane) - Baiken takes out a hanafuda card, then pushes the opponent, making Baiken's next attack unblockable for up to 14 seconds (or if Baiken is hit), indicated by the color cyan.
After placing the seal on her opponent, Baiken is able to follow up from Sakura, Tsuki & Tsuru by pressing any attack button;
  • Punch - Baiken shoulder-charges into her opponent.
  • Kick - Baiken hops forward for a 2-step axe kick.
  • Slash - Baiken rushes forward and slash her opponent, appearing on the other side.
  • Heavy Slash - Baiken does a flipping slash - akin to her original Youzansen - that sets her opponent on fire.
  • Dust - Zakuro.

Triple Tatami Gaeshi (三枚畳替し, Sanmai Tatami Gaeshi?, lit. Three-Ply Straw-Mat Refacer) was first introduced in the original Guilty Gear as her level 3 Tatami Gaeshi, and last seen in Guilty Gear XX Λ Core Plus R as a both a Force Break (As regular Baiken.) and Special Attack (As EX Baiken.).

Triple Tatami Gaeshi
Baiken slams her heel on the floor, summoning 3 tatami mats in a row that tilt up. On contact, the opponent bounces off the wall.

Tsurane Sanzu-watashi (連ね三途渡し, Tsurane Sanzu Watashi?, lit. Three-Way Consecutive Delivery) was first introduced in the original Guilty Gear.

Baiken rushes at her opponent, slashing them three times, with the characters 天地人 (Tenchijin; lit. Heaven, Earth & Man) appearing behind her; in the original Guilty Gear through to ΛCPR, they appeared one at a time, while later iterations had them all in a row on a background before the third slash.

In Guilty Gear, all three slashes are unblockable, but none of them can combo into each other. This would be fixed in Guilty Gear X, but they are no longer unblockable.

In Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2 and beyond, the attack is more cinematic, having Baiken delay the third slash by gracefully swinging her sword in a circle to imprint a moon behind her, then finishes off her opponent.

In Guilty Gear -STRIVE-, if used in the corner, it causes an Area Shift.

Baku (, Baku?, lit. Restrain) was first introduced in Guilty Gear X, and last seen in Guilty Gear XX Λ Core Plus R.

Baku
Baiken does a palm thrust, imprinting the kanji of the move's name. This can be followed up by:
  • Ki (, Ki?, lit. Turtle) - Baiken takes out a hanafuda card, then pushes the opponent, disabling their ability to jump for 14 seconds
  • Rin (, Rin?, lit. Giraffe) - Baiken takes out a hanafuda card, then pushes the opponent, disabling their ability to use Special Attacks for 14 seconds.
  • Ryuu (, Ryū?, lit. Dragon) - Baiken takes out a hanafuda card, then pushes the opponent, lowering their attack power for 14 seconds.
  • Hou (, ?, lit. Feng) - Baiken takes out a hanafuda card, then pushes the opponent, lowering their defense for 14 seconds.

Tate Shunmaku (殺陣瞬幕(たてしゅんまく), End of the Swordfight Scene?) was first introduced in Guilty Gear XX, and last seen in Guilty Gear XX Λ Core Plus R. Exclusive to EX Baiken.

Originally her Instant Kill in Guilty Gear.

Baiken takes a stance while holding her sword. If her opponent is next to her, she rushes through them, leaving them stunned in place with a circular Japanese painting replacing the background. As she sheathes her sword, her opponent gets sliced and drops to the floor.

Metsudo Kushodo (滅度九正道, Metsudo Ku Shō Dō?, lit. The True Ninth Path to Nirvana) was first introduced in Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2.

Metsudo Kushodo
After countering an attack using Azami or during Suzuran, Baiken fires five grappling hooks out of her rear kimono sleeve. If used close-range to the opponent, she uses them to pull her to the other side of the screen while charging through her opponent.

Kenjyu (拳銃, Kenjū?, lit. Handgun) was first introduced in Guilty Gear -Strive-.

Baiken takes a blunderbuss-style pistol out of her kimono, then fires a bomb that bursts into fireworks on contact. On the ground, Baiken fires the shot in a straight line. In the air, she fires it diagonally down.

If used in the corner, it causes an Area Shift.

Tate Shunmaku (殺陣瞬幕(たてしゅんまく), Instant End of the Swordfight?) is Baiken's first Instant Kill, first appearing in the original Guilty Gear and would be replaced by Garyou Tensei in Guilty Gear X.

Would become an Overdrive for EX Baiken in the Guilty Gear XX series.

Tate Shunmaku
Baiken delivers a single strike while passing through her foe. After sheathing her sword, the opponent collapses after getting barraged with multiple slashes.

Garyou Tensei (画竜点睛, Garyōtensei?, lit. Finishing Touch) is Baiken's second Instant Kill, first appearing in Guilty Gear X up to Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2.

Baiken rushes forward - as if using Suzuran, to slash her opponent. If she connects, a set of shoji doors obscure her and the opponent, showing only their silhouettes for 2 seconds - afterwards, the opponent's blood splatters against the doors as they collapse to the floor.

The REV 2 version is more cinematic - Baiken cuts through the opponent inside a traditional washitsu house, and the sliding doors close behind her and the opponent. After a fish hops in the garden's pond, the door is splattered with the opponent's blood and the entire house is revealed to have been cut in half, the upper half sliding down slightly.

    • Baku: Rin, replaced by Baku: Tsuki.
    • Baku: Ryu, replaced by Baku: Tsuru.
    • Baku: Hou, removed.
  • All of Baiken's guard attacks were changed from LeftDown RightDown in XX and Isuka, to LeftDown LeftDown motions in Λ Core.
  • In Λ Core, the Baku: Sakura/Tsuki/Tsuru Overdrive was removed for both normal and EX Baiken. Baku becomes instead a separate move while its Sakura, Tsuki and Tsuru variants act as follow-ups (all become Force Breaks that count as Overdrives).
  • Λ Core also adds in Ouren as a new guard reversal special.
  • Zakuro is added to normal Baiken's moveset in Λ Core Plus R, while Youshijin is now a standalone special with a new input; Zakuro uses Youshijin's old input.
  • Triple Tatami Gaeshi (originally a special move exclusive to EX Mode) is added as a Force Break in Plus R. Suzuran now allows Baiken to perform any of her guard specials during it, even without blocking an incoming attack.
