The United Kingdoms of Illyria is a unified alliance of more than twenty constituent nations, founded in 2183 by the United Nations. Currently, the country is divided into three kingdoms, each ruled by one of the Allied Kings. The city of Illyria serves as its capital.

Story

Background

After the Crusades, Europe was left with plots of land without a governing body. Except for France and England, there are no other known existing states. Europe also became a melting pot of different cultures, races and religion. To address the problem of disorganization, the United Nations divided Europe into states governed by three kings and joined them together as the Allied Kingdom. Ky Kiske was elected as king, and he was seated at the city of Illyria.

Guilty Gear 2 -Overture-

In 2185, Gears detained in Illyria begin vanishing. Alarmed, King Ky Kiske sends his men to investigate. The kingdom is then suddenly attacked by the Vizuel, and the Illyrian army is overwhelmed, leading Ky to ask for the assistance of Sol Badguy. The fate of the civilians is unknown; according to an interview, all were either evacuated or killed.^{[source needed]}

When Sol Badguy and Sin Kiske, alongisde Izuna, arrive in Illyria, they find the army and the castle guard defeated. In the throne room, Ky Kiske has been sealed by That Man. Sol fights Raven and Valentine, then travels to Ganymede along with Izuna to ask for Dr. Paradigm's help in releasing the king.

After being released, Ky is questioned regarding the attack in Illyria and a Gear being detained in the kingdom. Though reluctant in showing his secret, Ky eventually shows the Maiden of the Grove. Dr. Paradigm concludes that the Maiden was the reason for the attack, and decides that she should be destroyed. However, Ky stops him and admits that she is his lover. Shortly after, Dr. Paradigm's Gear friends attack the castle because of Valentine's brainwashing. Ky and Dr. Paradigm are able to hold them off and release them from her control, while Sol and Izuna hurry to rescue Sin, who had been kidnapped by Valentine.

After further battles, the group returns to Illyria. Ky offers Dr. Paradigm an alliance, promising that they would make history together. Paradigm decides to stay in the castle to help in releasing the Maiden from her frozen state. Sin also decides to stay to wait for his mother's awakening.

Guilty Gear -Strive-

Illyria, as a member of the G4, is expected to attend the upcoming G4 Summit being held at the White House, where the United States of America's proposal for mutual disarmament will be discussed. Though Leo Whitefang is concerned about Illyria's presence at the event, due to recent activity from I-No and Asuka R. Kreutz, Daryl and Ky Kiske agree that the G4 Summit is too important not to participate in despite the risks. Daryl attends the G4 Summit as Illyria's representative, while Leo leads a team to monitor the situation from a command center within Illyria Castle; to his dismay, he finds Daryl has recruited former assassins Zato-ONE and Millia Rage to be part of this team, as their skills in intelligence gathering are second to none.

During the opening hours of the G4 Summit, the White House is attacked by Happy Chaos, who takes the four nations' delegates hostage. Happy Chaos hacks the weapons systems of the nations, forcing them all to fire their entire arsenal on each other simultaneously, then offers each of the delegates a button that he says will destroy their country's weapons if pressed. Daryl is the first to press his; when the other nations' delegates see that it works as promised, they press theirs as well, averting mutual annihilation at each others' hands.

As the hostage situation progresses, Daryl repeatedly talks to Happy Chaos and comes to understand his motivations for the attack. With this knowledge, he's able to convince Happy Chaos to release all of the captured delegates by appealing to his sense of drama, leaving Colin Vernon, who had previously escaped to another section of the White House with the help of Sol Badguy, the only politician still trapped within the White House. Leo and his team assist in extracting the freed hostages and continue to work alongside the forces of the United States and Zepp to protect Colin Vernon and Sol from afar.

At some point after the White House Siege Incident, Ky resigns from his position as First Allied King to found the kingdom of Vialattea, a safe haven for Gears, alongside his wife.

Structure

Despite its name, the United Kingdoms of Illyria is actually a republic ruled by three democratically-elected kings, each of whom is responsible for approximately a third of Illyria's landmass. The position of First Allied King, also sometimes called the High King, was taken by Ky Kiske until his abdication of the throne following the White House Siege Incident. As the First Allied King, he was responsible for Illyria's capital and the surrounding regions as well as the portions of Illyria within the continent of Africa, and slightly outranked the other two kings in matters of Illyria's affairs.

The Second Allied King and Third Allied King are equal in power to each other. Leo Whitefang, the Second King, governs Old Russia and the Middle Eastern states, while the Third King, Daryl, is responsible for the kingdom's eastmost regions.

During Illyria's early days, the country was functionally governed by the United Nations. Illyria's government retains close ties to both the United Nations Conclave and the Sanctus Populi, to the point where the highest ranking soldiers of the Illyrian Praetorian Guard, the Phalanx Nine, act as the personal guard of the Sanctus Maximus Populi. The discovery of the Conclave and Ariels' treachery has left Illyria in a state of emergency, with a number of the kingdom's constituent nations hoping to use the power vacuum to make a play for increased control. Given Ariels' betrayal, Illyrian leadership has decided to participate in the upcoming selection of the next Sanctus Maximus Populi; though the Sanctus Populi's leadership is unhappy with the interference, they've accepted Illyria's intervention in the matter.

The independent kingdom of Vialattea, ruled by Illyria's former First King and his wife, Dizzy, is surrounded entirely by Illyrian territory and for that reason is often traveled through by Illyria's people.

• The concept of a massive multi-continental nation centered on Rome may be inspired by the historical Roman Empire, which encompassed much of Europe, west Asia, and north Africa at the peak of its size and power.
