Zessen
Zessen is Anji Mito's signature weapon and one of the Sacred Treasures that originally formed the Outrage,[1] a weapon created by the scientist Frederick Bulsara to destroy the Gears. An instroment[2] that concentrates and amplifies Wind magic, Zessen can change size as required, and it bears gliphs - resembling kanji - that activate when in use.[3] Though intended to be carried by those adept at the use of magic,[4] Zessen puts massive mental and physical strain upon their wielder.[5]
When no longer bound by the Outrage, Zessen was not used as a weapon, but was instead used to create and maintain a Dimensional Barrier that surrounded a Japanese Colony; it was, however, stolen by Anji Mito upon fleeing said Colony. Anji claims to have stumbled upon it.[6]
Zessen is a type of Japanese war fan - or Tessen - that is primarily used for signalling and combat. Zessen is a Menbarigata Tessen, or a war fan with the ability to fold and collapse upon itself.[7] Tessen come in many forms, with Zessen specifically resembling a Mai-ogi fan - a fan used for dance.[8] The act of fighting with a fan is called Tessenjutsu.
Appearance
Zessen is a seven-spoked fan, bearing white washi decorated with a vague wind pattern and three stark yellow diamonds distributed across the span of the fan. It has a red handle with gold trim, and a beaded tassle at the end. Two gold designs on the fan - which resemble a knotted diamond - sit on the handle of the fan, between a plaque with kanji on it. The Kanji reads 絶 (zetsu).
Trivia
- Mizuha's grandfather in the Guilty Gear Xtra manga possesses his own replicas of Zessen.
- 絶 (Zetsu) - the kanji on Zessen's has a few different meanings. As a word, it means unparalleled or unequaled, however Zetsu can also be used to describe a wooden clapper used at the beginning and the end of a performance, or the bell clapper used in Japanese wind chimes.
- Zetsu is also the name of the dragon summoned for Anji Mito's Instant Kill.
